Managing Plex and Subtitles, both burned-in and external

Plex is pretty good at handling subtitles. If it finds an external SRT file or any other subtitle format that has the same filename as the movie/episode, it will show it as an selectable subtitle. If it finds a subtitle track within the video file, such as a SRT file in a MKV file, it will display that too.

But what do we do with movies/episodes that have the subtitle burned-in in the video? As this isn't a separate/optional subtitle, Plex has no idea it is there.

This gets even more tough if you are sharing your Plex server with someone else, and they only wanna see movies with subtitles/spoken language in their native language.

I perplexed (ha ha) about this a couple of years ago, and I came up with a solution that I have been doing for years now.

My Solution

It's pretty simple: have two TV libraries, and two Movie libraries. One of them for content with subtitles/native spoken language, and one of them with all content.

Basically your directory structure will look like this:

Then you put your movies without subtitles in the regular Movies folder, and put the ones with subtitles (either burned in or external) in the Movies (Swedish Subtitles) folder. Same for the TV shows and its episodes.

Then in Plex, you wanna set up the libraries.

Make one Movie library called "Movies (all)", and for that library point to both X:/Movies and X:/Movies (Swedish Subtitles). Then make another Movie library called "Movies (Swedish subtitles)", and for that library point to just X:/Movies (Swedish Subtitles).

And do the same for TV shows.

It will end up looking something like this: My Plex libraries

And that's pretty much it. Now you can just share the library with Swedish subtitles to the ones who need subtitles, and anyone who doesn't need them can enjoy the content that does not have subtitles in the (all) libraries.

The downsides of this method are mostly cosmetical:

Recently Added

Content with Swedish subtitles show up twice in the Recently Added section, as they are in two libraries. The ones without Swedish subtitles only show once, as they are only in one library.

Alternative Solution

Before I ended up doing what I described above, I did a much more hacky solution.

I basically made a dummy external .srt file for each movie/episode that had burned-in subtitle (or well, I ran a script that did it automatically). This .srt file only contained this:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:01,000
Burned-In Subtitle

By doing this, you can then just go into any episode/movie and see if there is a Swedish subtitle track available. If there isn't, there isn't.

Now why did I stop doing this?

Upside of this is of course that you only need one library for Movies, and one for TV, instead of two for each.
