Why doesn't cp have a progress bar like wget?

Decided to look this up when I was copying a couple of gigabytes of files to my NAS using the cp command.

The main idea is that in Unix you only want messages if something goes wrong. Which is fine. But I found this extra interesting:

The practical reason is that in unix's very early days, there still were teleprinters; that is, the output from programs would be printed on paper, and you don't want to print progress bars.
